The Biodiversity and Conservation Research (B.M.C.R) Unit provide the scientific basis to back GWS's conservation action and policy advocacy. GWS believes that conservation is most effective when backed by scientific evidence. The Impact of advocacy and policy interventions would be best articulated if well researched. The unit conducts research into migratory birds, threatened species, agricultural landscapes, community conservation, climate change, Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBBAs), protected area management and land use changes. We also provide advisory services to our partners on biodiversity management especially in the mining and extractive industries as well as renewable energy sectors. Our main partners are government agencies within the environment and natural resource sectors (Environmental Protection Agency, Forestry Commission, Wildlife Division), other environmental NGOs and some Birdlife International Partners. Currently the unit has the following programs running:
